What are the benefits of dog grooming?

Someone asked me today why I spend so much time grooming my dog. I want to keep him clean because I like being clean. It also helps with the shedding, but I was wondering if there are any other benefits/reasons to do it?

Grooming is an important part of your dog’s health, with regular brushing and combing helping to remove dead hair and dirt and prevent matting. Dogs who are regularly groomed tend to have a healthier and shinier coat because it stimulates the blood supply to the skin.

Grooming your dog can also be a good way to bond with your dog, and it’s important to get him used to it from an early age. Many dogs learn to see their routine brushing as an alternate petting, another source of affection and attention. A good quality brush and comb will help you with your dog’s coat, but also remember that your dog’s eyes, ears, and nails require attention as well.

It’s true that dogs were around for centuries and certainly survived without being groomed, but I’m sure they didn’t live as long as they do now, being groomed. Grooming your dog keeps it clean and while grooming it you are able to notice any potential problems with the dog, since coat and skin quality are good indicators of overall health.

The same for human washing/grooming themselves. My dog gets a bath 2x month, brushed daily, and full groomed every 6 wks. Works for me and him! I say keep doing what you’re doing unless the extra baths are drying your dogs skin out.

I say you are doing a great thing..Better to have a dog and totally take care of it then to have it and not even be bothered..I think it makes such a difference in the dogs behavior by taking the time to be social with him. Some people need to take heed of those great grooming skills.
