PetSafe Healthy Pet Food Station Dog and Cat Food System with Stainless Steel Bowl, Large

Okay… so I received this Pet Food Station to review and was a bit disappointed in the fact that we received the LARGE size when we have a dog that weighs all of 12 pounds! This is definitely made for a much bigger dog – we’d have to buy 3-4 bags of food just to fit inside the holder and then because the food pieces are so small for our dog, they would all be falling out! I’m sure, had we received the size closer to what we needed, this product would have been great. It’s easy to get the top off for refilling purposes and easy to clean out the try. I would be happy to give it 5 stars had we received the size we could actually use!

As a dog owner I gave this device a try. I don’t see any value of it for a dog. Sure the dish is a sturdy metal construction and the dog’s dry food can be contained inside the tower portion of the product. However, my dog, like most dogs is a glutton. That is he never knows when he is full and will keep taking food from the tower. I am told cats will only eat enough to satisfy their hunger and will not overeat. Thus, this product should probably only be marketed to cats.

This is a great automatic pet feeder. It’s nice to leave in the mudroom, where we put the dogs while we’re away. It eliminates constant food-bowl-filling. It’s pretty sturdy and stable. I would definitely recommend it. All the best.

Call me old fashioned but when I spend the price of six pizzas some places on a dog/cat bowl I would expect it to be well built. I understand that it feels better when full of food but it just seems cheaply made for the cost. It does however work so I will compare the pros and cons below in a easy to follow format.
PROS:
+ Has stainless steel bowl that is removable (sort of, more details to follow) to allow you to clean it.
+ Has a semi-clear food “tank” so you can keep an eye on the reserves.
+ Can reduce the amount of times you fill your dog/cat’s bowl.
CONS:
- Does not have a switch to close off the food from dropping. This means you can’t limit your pets between meals. It also means when you travel you have food sitting out getting stale at home. But worst of all, it means you can only clean the SS bowl when you let the food run out unless you want a HUGE mess. Basically this means the best part about this system isn’t usable when you keep food in it all the time. So you have to choose between a clean bowl and keeping it full of food.
- Due to the design issue above, the entire container of food is always open to air, pests, etc. Which means your kitchen smells more like dog/cat food and you little friend is getting stale/soggy food.
- Build quality isn’t worth the cost. It is cheap plastic that doesn’t fit together as nicely as it should. It should also be weighted in the base so it doesn’t slide around as much when dogs try to get the last food (which means the tank is empty or near about). It feels like it should be half the price or less to be honest.

If you are looking for a way to have food out all day for your pet, without having large quantities sitting around or tipping out of a big bowl, this just might be for you. Rather than fill up your pet’s dish each day, just fill up the large hopper and let the food come on out as the pet feeds.
This isn’t a revolutionary idea but it is well done and easy to use. The stainless steel bowl comes out for a run through the dishwasher. The top of the hopper locks so adventurous kittens (like mine) can’t tamper with the food. It doesn’t take up much floor space and it keeps their food area tidy. I’ve used a self-feeder before but it was square and I found it didn’t flow well. The round shape here, plus the hourglass top, keeps food flowing without having all the contents come pouring out of the opening when the hopper is filled. I appreciate also that it is a basic color scheme (no paw prints all over it) and that it lets me get rid of the bag of cat food that always sits around by the food dish for daily feeding.
Kitten approved – she went right to it and started eating.
